Fire and Sand: The Living Mythology of Pele

Course Description:
Sandplay Therapy is an expressive, culturally-sensitive, trauma-informed therapeutic method that helps children and adults to alleviate symptoms of distress following traumatic events and improve community resilience. Sandplay has been used effectively around the world with communities in crisis.
On May 3, 2018 Tutu Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano took her lava form and erupted forcefully for three months on Hawai`i Island claiming nearly 1,000 homes. Local sandplay therapists mobilized to provide emotional support. This workshop explores the living mythology of Pele and patterns of creation and destruction …. Participants will explore , how she appears in the sandplay images of children and adults, and the use of mobile sandplay therapy in times of community crisis. Participants will view an award-winning documentary film, Fire and Sand and explore the archetypal patterns of destruction and creation in today’s world.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify archetypal patterns in the Pele myth and in today’s world crisis.
- Explore the “living mythology” of Pele in the Hawaiian culture and in sandplay therapy.
- Identify three ways that sandplay therapy alleviates symptoms of traumatic stress.
- Distinguish mobile sandplay in relief work from traditional applications of sandplay therapy.
