Maui, Bringer of Light: Healing Stories for Dark Times

November 8, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Speaking at the Sandplay Therapists of America National Conference.  Pre-conference program will be with Vince Pastore, PhD

Myths and fairy tales predate recorded time. These stories present us with blueprints of what it means to be human and guide us in the process of individuation. Trauma can cause disruptions that sever us from these ancient stories. Traumatized people may become imprisoned by narratives written by primitive defense structures (Kalsched, 2013).

Maui, the trickster and Polynesian demi-god is a young hero who brings light to his people in dark times. This workshop introduces the myth of Maui and its emergence in the cotransference of sandplay to guide a young man from the darkness of immense traumatic grief to the light of his own psychic birth. Through experiential activities, participants also explore stories of darkness and light in their lives and in our present culture.
