Conference theme:  “Changing Horizons:  Encountering the other in Sandplay Therapy

I will be presenting a keynote lecture entitled,  Fire and Fertility: The soul-preserving function of the “autonomous Other”

Abstract:   Pele–Hawaiian goddess of the volcano–destroys everything in her path with lava and fire. Her younger sister follows, fertilizing the blackened land with greenery and bright red flowers. Sonu Shamdasani notes that ‘the Other’ is the ‘not I’ and what Jung encounters in The Red Book as his soul. Through the myth and symbolism of the goddess Pele and vivid clinical case illustrations, this lecture explores how encounters with ‘the autonomous Other’ bring forth  soulful living in sandplay therapy.
