About the Seminar

Sexual trauma takes many forms and occurs at an alarming rate–leaving deep lasting wounds that impact every aspect of a survivor’s life. Many experience high rates of PTSD and face complex neurobiological, emotional, and relational challenges that are likely to intensify without appropriate support. When survivors seek help, symptoms such as dissociation, shame, self-blame, hopelessness, and difficulty with verbal expression often become barriers to effective treatment. When these symptoms remain trapped in the body, medical and sexual health issues often emerge, further complicating the clinical picture.
With roots in Jungian theory, play therapy, and contemplative practice, Sandplay Therapy offers an evidenced-based, trauma-responsive and neurobiologically-informed method that promotes whole-person recovery for survivors of sexual trauma. By telling their story using symbols and sand in the presence of a “generously-attuned” therapist, people who have experienced trauma can tap into archetypal energies and activate the psyche’s natural healing capacities to improve mind and body health.  With sandplay, they gradually awaken their senses and safely access and reprocess traumatic memories.  A regenerative narrative follows that brings meaning and purpose to their lives. Especially for survivors of sexual assault, sandplay can be a gentle, yet powerful path toward healing and reclaiming the soul and sacred body.
This seminar offers a unique opportunity to integrate the profound wisdom of Sandplay Therapy with the science of trauma recovery, particularly for professionals who support individuals impacted by sexual trauma. Particular attention will be given to the application of Dr. Bruce Perry’s Neurosequential Model and Dr. Don Kalsched’s theories on the dissociating psyche—what he identifies as the core complex of the traumatized psyche. These concepts will come to life through compelling case studies, experiential activities, and engaging discussions. In addition to gaining expert knowledge that will enhance your practice, you will also experience the warmth, depth, and growth energy shared by our esteemed speaker from Hawaii. This event promises to provide a unique glimpse into the transformative journey of supporting clients affected by trauma, offering both professional development and a deep sense of connection.

4. Assess the primacy of the therapeutic relationship in trauma treatment and practice skills for trauma-responsive therapeutic presence during small group activities.
5. Evaluate sandplay activities that promote self-regulation and neurodevelopment using the Neurosequential Model.
6. Analyze symbols and archetypes that may represent trauma defense systems as well as resiliency as they appear in sandplay scenes, using case examples presented during the workshop.
7. Develop a plan to utilize sandplay techniques in your clinical practice with survivors of sexual trauma.

A self-care note from Dr. Lorraine Freedle: Dear participant, some material presented in this workshop may trigger emotional distress. It is well- documented that indirect exposure to trauma narratives may put helping professionals and trainees at risk for developing trauma reactions, particularly those who have a personal trauma history or limited clinical experience. Please do periodic self-checks during the workshop on how you are being affected. Use grounding techniques and expressive activities throughout the workshop to minimize risk. Limit exposure if you start feeling distressed and request support facilitators if needed. After the workshop, please take care of yourself and make time for self-care.
