This course provides an overview of the neuropsychology of trauma and sandplay therapy. Students will explore the impact of trauma on the brain, body, and psyche/soul and discover how sandplay heals trauma from a neuropsychological perspective. Leading theories on trauma treatment are reviewed and applied to case studies in sandplay with an emphasis on theories rooted in neurodevelopment, depth psychology, affective neuroscience and body-centered therapies. Through participation in lecture and discussion, interaction with myth and symbol, compelling case studies, and personal artwork, journaling and other experiential activities students will have the opportunity to connect on a deep level to this work and to integrate concepts.. For more information and registration click here. Note: The course might not be open for registration until late August, 2021.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs): Through engagement in the didactic, interactive and experiential aspects of this course students will be able to:

  1. Identify five (5) key tenets of Jungian sandplay therapy as founded by Dora Kalff.
  2. Define trauma and its effect on the brain, body, and psyche/soul.
  3. Apply principles of “trauma-informed care” and theories on trauma treatment (e.g. Perry, van der Kolk, Levine, Kalsched and others) to sandplay therapy practice.
  4. Describe how myth may emerge and facilitate individual and community healing following a traumatic event/s.
  5. Practice establishing relational safety and “generous attunement” in sandplay.
  6. Describe how play and somatosensory engagement activate mind-body connections and stimulate neurodevelopment.
  7. Define “self-directed gradual exposure” and explain how the trauma narrative is expressed and re-processed in sandplay.
  8. Define four essential components of sandplay therapy that promote neural integration and healing of trauma. (Freedle, 2017)
  9. Discuss clinical and ethical considerations when setting up “a free and protected space” for sandplay in an emergency field setting (e.g., Red Cross Shelter, school, community center).
  10. Identify the evidence base for the use of sandplay with children and adults who have experienced trauma.
  11. Apply knowledge about the neurobiology of empathy and stress to develop four (4) self-care strategies to prevent vicarious trauma.
  12. Describe guidelines for ethical practice of sandplay and identify your skills and limitations in use of this method with clients.
  13. Explore the sandplay journeys of children and adults with a variety of traumatic disorders such as complex developmental trauma, PTSD, traumatic grief, and traumatic brain injury.
  14. Utilize Martin Kalff’s experience-based sandplay consultation, myth and symbols, along with personal artwork, poetry and sandplay activities to reflect on course content and integrate concepts.
