Plenary session. Saturday morning, June 4, 2016. 830 am until 1000 am.

Description of Session:

Connections provide a liminal pathway for transforming energies. The neuropsychology of sandplay therapy involves understanding the brain and its dynamic interplay with psyche that drive neurodevelopment and transformative change. The psyche encompasses the conscious and unconscious—linking body, mind and spirit. According to Jung, the psyche is “the source of life” and “the prime mover” (CW 8, para 666). The brain consists of a complex system of feedback loops that link our inner and outer life. With over 100 trillion synapses in the brain, there are endless possibilities for connection.

Sandplay therapy provides an enriched sensory and relational experience that promotes neurodevelopment. As we touch and move sand, play freely, symbolize and self-reflect in the presence of an attuned therapist multiple brain systems are activated and connections are naturally forged. Sandplay represents and facilitates the neural integration process. Drawing from the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (Perry, 2006, 2009), research in neuroscience, case material, and the three roots of sandplay, this presentation will explore a neuropsychological perspective on how sandplay therapy heals and transforms.
